Although pre-galvanising is very similar to hot-dipped galvanisation, there are some clear differences. For instance, pre-galvanising is performed at the steel mill on materials that already have a specific shape; however, this doesn\u2019t apply to hot-dipped steel. With this being said, what is pre-galvanised steel, and what sets it apart from other forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/rapidmetals.co.uk\/product-category\/steel\/sheet-steel\/galvanised-sheet\/\">galvanised steel<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Pre-Galvanising?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First thing\u2019s first, it needs to be established what pre-galvanising is. As previously mentioned, pre-galvanising, otherwise known as mill galvanising, takes place at the steel mill. The process involves the surface being cleaned before the metal is dipped into a hot zinc liquid bath and the recoiling process takes place. Despite this, upon the fabrication process taking place, any uncoated and exposed areas will be made apparent. For instance, when it comes to cutting a galvanised steel sheet, the edges will be left exposed. It\u2019s for this reason that pre-galvanising is typically applied to a material that already has a specific shape.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Application of Pre-Galvanising<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the name suggests, pre-galvanising takes place in the initial production stages. This is why it usually occurs at the mills, as the galvanised product will usually be fashioned at a later date.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Coating of Pre-Galvanised Steel<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of thickness, pre-galvanising allows for uniform thickness, which is typically around 20-30 \u03bcm when it comes to pre-galvanising.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As earlier touched on, pre-galvanising is one of the initial stages, meaning that edges often don\u2019t get coated at this time should they be cut later on in the process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, the cleaning of the steel allows for a strong and metallurgical bond between the zinc coating and the base metal. This cleaning is either executed via chemical or mechanical means and, in some instances, both methods are applied.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since pre-galvanising takes place at the mills, the coating is typically applied with zero damage to the layer, whilst producing a uniform and bright finish.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Abrasion Resistance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As opposed to other galvanisation forms, pre-galvanised steel can often be prone to rusting. For instance, you may be able to develop a thin barrier film of insoluble zinc corrosion products. This includes patina, which can be applied to the steel\u2019s outer surface to prevent too much exposure to the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sacrificial Protection<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since galvanised steel is formed by coating steel in zinc, this results in a protective layer. Consequently, the zinc acts as a protective anode, which becomes an integral feature of the steel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Lifespan of Galvanised Steel<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Galvanised steel is incredibly durable, meaning that it can last anywhere between 34 and 170 years.
